Applying for Citizenship
APPLYING FOR CITIZENSHIP
Any U.S. immigrant has the ability to seek citizenship through a process called naturalization, which allows the immigrant to be eligible for the same U.S. benefits as natural born citizens. The naturalization process can be quite challenging, however, as there are many stipulations to becoming a citizen with a legal residence status, including:
- You must be 18 years of age or older
- Have the ability to read, write and speak English
- Understand the history of the United States and are familiar with the U.S. government
- You have good moral character (GMC)
- Abide by the same principles as the U.S. Constitution
- Have been a legal permanent resident for 5 years, with a green card
- Under qualified circumstances, have served in the U.S. military
- In the past five years, have been physically present in the U.S. for at least half of that time
Unfortunately, many naturalization forms are denied due to simple mistakes or errors on the application. If you are applying for citizenship, it is important to consult a qualified immigration lawyer to assist you in the completion of the required paperwork and to help prepare you for the naturalization interview.
At the Kalra Law Firm, we are available to support you throughout the naturalization process. It is our goal to see you become a legal resident of the United States so you can continue to conduct business and be with your family.
